Where to Watch the Home Opener
Posted by McHenry Row on 11:11 AM
Spring is in the air and opening day is almost here! On April 10, Camden Yards will be filled with excited Orioles' fans ready to take on the Toronto Blue Jays! If you don't have tickets to the game, you can still sport get decked out in orange and head to McHenry Row's many restaurants to catch the game, or check out these spots recommended by Baltimore Magazine (including one right here at McHenry Row!):
Alewife: Take your pick from more than 35 brews on tap at this downtown bar, which will be featuring specials on local beers to celebrate the big game. Bartenders at Alewife will be on hand bright and early on April 10, pouring $5 pints of Full Tilt, Heavy Seas, Brewers Art, and Union Craft beers starting at 10 a.m. 21 N. Eutaw St., 410-545-5112.
Flying Dog at Diamond Tavern: This restaurant, located inside The Hilton Baltimore, is teaming up with Flying Dog Brewery to host a pre-game block party on its patio featuring Flying Dog Bloodline Orange Ale. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., enjoy the soulful sounds of The Jordan August Band with DJ Sail Flip while sipping $5 beers and discounted cocktails and Orange Crushes. 401 W. Pratt St., 443-573-8777.
Kislings Tavern: In honor of the first home game of the season, this corner sports bar will be offering some hometown-inspired drink deals. Fans can enjoy $4 Orange Crushes, $5 O Bombs, (orange vodka and red bull) and $3 16-oz Natty Boh cans all night long. The afternoon game against the Toronto Blue Jays also conveniently coincides with Kisling's daily happy hour, which highlights nachos for $6.99, ten wings for $7.99, and crab dip for $8.99 from 3-7 p.m. 2100 Fleet St., 410-327-5477.
Mother's Grille: If you'll be cheering on the birds from Federal Hill, head to the famous purple patio, which transforms to orange this time of year, at this local favorite. Mother's will be celebrating the O's return with a massive outdoor postgame party featuring offerings like $3 Miller Lite cans, $5 Smirnoff Orange Crushes, and a special ballpark menu. 1113 S. Charles St., 410-244-8686.
"O"pening Day Tailgate at Horseshoe Casino: Although earlier this week 98 Rock's Sarah Fleischer announced that she will be retiring in June, you can still hang out with the beloved mid-day DJ at Horseshoe Casino's Outdoor Event Plaza on April 10. The casino and 98 Rock will be hosting an all-you-can-eat and drink tailgate from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with live music, plenty of draft beer, and a stadium fare buffet featuring new items from Guy's Bar B Que Joint—which recently opened in the casino's food court-style Baltimore Marketplace. 1525 Russell St., 844-777-8463.
Power Plant Live: Head to this downtown nightlife district for some O's-themed tailgates and postgame parties on Opening Day. Starting at 10 a.m., all of the bars inside Power Plant Live will be offering $1 ballpark hotdogs, $3 Miller Lite drafts, $20 100-oz Miller Lite towers, and no cover for fans sporting orange apparel. 34 Market Place, 410-727-5483.
Sliders: Located only 771 feet away from home plate at Camden Yards, this popular sports bar is the closest you can get to all of the O's action without a ticket to the stadium. Sliders will be kicking off its Opening Day party at 7a.m with a $10 breakfast buffet and full bar service both inside the restaurant and outside on its patio. Classic fan fare like wings, fries, chicken tenders, and—of course—sliders will also be offered on a game day menu, along with Sliders' signature $10 24-oz. birdbowls full of Orange Crush. 504 Washington Blvd., 410-547-8891.
World of Beer: With more than 50 global brews on tap and tons of pub grub to go around, this McHenry Row spot is a go-to hangout for any sporting event. Signature snacks like flatbreads, black and tan onion rings, mac and cheese, and huge German pretzels will all be highlights of the $5 game day menu—which features built-in beer pairing suggestions. World of Beer will also be offering $4 22-oz Natty Boh drafts starting an hour before the game begins. 1724 Whetstone Way, 41-752-2337
INSIDE THE PARK:
Flying Dog Brewery: In addition to the brews featured at The Hilton's block party outside of the park, stop by Flying Dog Grill on the lower concourse where the brewery's Firkin Friday tradition will be in full effect for the home opener. Every Friday home game, Flying Dog taps one of its unfiltered cask-conditioned ales in a 10-gallon keg, and for Opening Day the cask will be full of Flying Dog's just-released Single Hop Imperial IPA.
Heavy Seas: Since all beers pretty much cost the same amount inside the park, get more bang for your buck by taking advantage of the local brews which can be found around every corner. For Heavy Seas favorites like Loose Cannon, Cross Bones, or SmoothSail drafts, visit the Heavy Seas Beer Cart on the upper level near section 364, Free State Pub on the lower level between sections 49 and 53, Old Bay Seafood on the upper level outside sections 332 and 334 or any of the Club Level Bars.

Weekend Events: March 20-22
Posted by McHenry Row on 9:20 AM
Happy First Day of Spring! There may be snow flurries outside, but we're not letting that dampen our weekend spirit! You might be tempted to stay inside and watch March Madness, but there are plenty of other options in Baltimore if you're not a college hoops fan. Check out Baltimore Magazine's Weekend Lineup:
Mar. 20: Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival's Battle of the Bands: The Final Four
The 8x10, 10 E. Cross St. 8 p.m. $10. 410-625-2000. the8x10.com
After Maryland beats Valpo this Friday, you can catch a different kind of March Madness as the Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival's final four duke it out in the last round of Battle of the Bands. Hear Harrisburg's bluegrass boys, Colebrook Road; Philly's folk-playing fellas, Man About A Horse; Towson's twangy, thumping Bald Mountain Band; and Baltimore's own Fried Pickin'. The winner of the Friday night fight will open the third annual festival on April 25 in Druid Hill Park, playing before other talented performers like Cris Jacobs, The Bumper Jacksons, The Manly Deeds, and Letitia VanSant. Last year's winner was the Highland Hill Boys, of Howard County, who not long ago released their self-titled debut.
Mar. 21: Save Your Soul Spring Fling at Union Craft Brewery
Union Craft Brewing, 1700 Union Ave. 7 p.m.-1 a.m. $7. 410-467-0290. missiontix.com
Like budding daffodils, the monthly Save Your Soul dance party is busting out of the dark depths of Lithuanian Hall and sprouting up at Union Craft brewery to celebrate the start of spring. Get down with DJ Rob Fearless spinning soul on the ones and twos, tip back some of Baltimore's best craft beer, and snack on great local grub. The Local Oyster's Nick Shauman will be there, shucking Chesapeake beauties for your shooting and slurping pleasure, while the DiPinoteca food truck will keep you full with authentic Italian eats like meatball parm, paninis, and pasta. Not to twist your arm or anything, but winter was long: Sounds like this'll certainly save our souls.
Mar. 21: Charm City Roller Girls Meet March Madness
DuBurns Arena, 3100 Boston St. 5:15 p.m., doors; 6:30 p.m., event. $12-25. charmcityrollergirls.com
This weekend, the badass chicks behind Charm City Roller Girls are celebrating their tenth season with a rip riding, rough-and-tumble roller derby in Canton. If you've never seen them in action, this is no spin around the skate park—no coast beneath the disco ball. See for yourself on Saturday, as four hometown teams are pitted against each other in a triple-header tournament. Starting with Junkyard Dolls vs. Speed Regime and Mobtown Mods vs. Night Terrors, the competition will culminate with the Game 1 winner taking on the Game 2 loser, and the top two teams advancing to the championships on April 25. Get in on the action and while you're at it, make your own March Madness-style bracket. My bet's on last year's runner-ups and winners: the Night Terrors and the Mobtown Mods.
Mar. 21: Station North Arts Market
Station North Chicken Box, 1 W. North Ave. 1-5 p.m. Free. 410-962-7075. stationorth.org
Just named America's third best art district by USA Today (move over Manhattan, Miami, and L.A.), Station North is a Charm City creative mecca that's only continuing to grow. Head there this Saturday and immerse yourself in local talent at the Station North Arts Market. With handmade jewelry, photography, paintings, prints, and more, you can buy or simply browse. Afterwards, walk around the neighborhood and admire its Open Wallsmurals, which were just added to the Google Street Art Project.
Mar. 22: Baltimore Cocktail Week Launch Party
Pen & Quill, 1701 N. Charles St. 6-10 p.m. $20. 410-601- 3588. baltimorecocktailweek.com
From spirited standbys like Rye, Wit & Wisdom, and B&O to hip neighborhood haunts like W.C. Harlan and Bookmakers Cocktail Club to now nearly everyone in-between, Charm City's cocktail scene has evolved into a fierce force to be reckoned with. With so much moving and shaking and stirring around town, it only makes sense to give it a toast. Enter Baltimore Cocktail Week, the inaugural seven-day celebration of the city's hospitality industry, with classes, community events, and of course, cocktails. It kicks off at Pen & Quill this Sunday, with a contest featuring 15 of Balt's best bartenders, lite fare that we hope includes P&Q's beef brisket steam buns and beer clams, and a complimentary beverage to boot.

Weekend Events: February 20-22
Posted by McHenry Row on 8:41 AM
TGIF! Who is ready for the weekend? After a bitterly cold week, we are ready to be indoors, but we won't let that stop us from having some fun! Here is a preview of what's going on in Baltimore this weekend, courtesy of Baltimore Magazine:
Feb. 22: Blue Pit BBQ Mac-N-Cheese Cook-Off
Blue Pit BBQ & Whiskey Bar, 1601 Union Ave. 6-8 p.m. $5 to compete; $20 to eat and judge.443-948-5590. bluepitbbq.com
This weather needs to break or I'm going to. There are only so many sweaters we can wear and so much whiskey we can drink before we all burst like a Baltimore City water pipe. Luckily, this Sunday, you can warm up for a good cause, when the fundraising cycling team, Fierce Chicks Rock, throws a mac-n-cheese cook-off at Blue Pit BBQ to benefit Moveable Feast. Anyone can participate—though my secret recipe is really just a late-night microwave bowl of the classic blue box Kraft, made with whole milk, and often preceded by a number of beers—or come and simply indulge. Awards will go to the best traditional, creative, people's choice, and even vegan macaroni.
Feb. 20: DuClaw & Cigar City Brewing Launch Party
Max's Tap House, 737 S Broadway. 5 p.m. Free. 443-559-9900. duclaw.com
You might recognize the early, short French film, A Trip To the Moon, but what you might not know is that the original story isn't set in the City of Love, but rather the late 19th-century city of Charm. In it, the Baltimore Gun Club president, Impey Barbicane, decides to send himself and his comrades, via cannon, to the moon. Also inspired by the adventurous tale is a new session ale from Baltimore's own DuClaw Brewing and, interestingly enough, Tampa's Cigar City Brewing called Impey Barbicane's Moon Gun. With strong malt flavor, caramel notes, and a slightly hoppy bitterness, the new craft brew launches in Fells Point on Friday, served on tap and in firkins with the two founders and brewers on hand to celebrate.
Feb. 20-22: American Craft Council Show
Baltimore Convention Center, 1 W. Pratt St. Fri. 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. $5-36. 410-649-7000. craftcouncil.org
The nation's largest contemporary art show is rolling into town for a three-day celebration of all things "Made in America." With more than 650 jewelry, clothing, furniture, and home décor artists from all across the country, you can browse, buy, watch demos, or meet the artists. While you're there, check out some local talent, including Charm City Craft Mafia members like Bmore Papercuts, Stitch & Rivet leather goods, Dylan Designfurniture, Metamorphisis Metals stamped jewelry, and Broken Plate Pendant Co. goods, as well as beer tastings by—fittingly enough—Union Craft.
Feb. 21: Dirty Soul Dance Party
The Crown, 1910 N. Charles St. 10 p.m. Free. 410-625-4848. facebook.com
This monthly late-night dance party brings you all the funk you need to get out of that winter one and into a full-on, feel-good groove. Before long, you'll be peeling off layers while digging on an eclectic mix of soul, funk, and rock-and-roll, with DJ Landis Expandisspinning on the ones and twos. And we're not talking Bruno Mars; we're talking the good stuff: Otis, Ray, Stevie, James, Marvin, Prince—though, admittedly, we do kind of lovethat song. It's a definite don't-miss. So this weekend, throw on some fly threads, gather up the crew, and get down at this booty-shaking, floor-quaking, good time.
Feb. 21: Baltimore Square Dance
Mobtown Ballroom, 861 Washington Blvd. 8-11 p.m. $7-10. mobtownballroom.com
If soul music isn't your bag, you can still get your dance on this Saturday—your square dance, to be exact—at Mobtown Ballroom in Pigtown. You probably don't know how, but that's okay. Everyone's welcome at this fun, music-filled night, beginners and all, and lessons will be taught throughout the evening. Plus, if you need a little liquid courage to get down to the old timey music, there will be a full bar to help you (for a little while, at least) with all the steps.
Where will we see our McHenry Row residents this weekend?
