Every year we celebrate a man who stood up and fought for what he believed in and changed the world with those beliefs. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 18th this year and there is no shortage of events to commemorate this amazing individual’s life. A parade celebrating the life and accomplishments of the civil rights leader. Cheer and dance squads, school bands, equestrian groups, floats and more will be marching in the parade to honor the late Dr. King. The parade starts at noon at Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Eutaw Street. Learn more about the parade here.

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the great William Shakespeare’s death, Center Stage will be putting on their rendition of his classic comedy, As You Like It. Traditionally done with an all-male cast, Center Stage will turn tradition on its head as it performs the play with an all-female cast. The 25 minute drive to the theater from McHenry Row will give you time to practice your best Shakespearean insults. As You Like It will be going on until Valentine’s Day next month so make sure you see it before it’s too late! Find out how to purchase your tickets here.

Don't Let the Weather Get You Down

Now that winter is finally upon us, those heaters are going to be kicking on a lot more often. That means electric bills are going to rise. That’s a drain on your wallet because who wants to stay in a cold apartment? Don’t let the cold weather get you down though. There are ways to save that don’t mean freezing until spring.

Let the light in. While it is most certainly dark and gloomy during the winter time, what little sunshine we get should be embraced! Open those blinds and shutters and let the sunlight warm your house. It doesn’t cost any money and you can enjoy it from inside your home.

Leaving for the day? Turn the thermostat down. There’s no point in heating a house for no one! Keeping the thermostat turned down during the day whether you’re out for a couple of hours or the whole day will help you save some money in the long run.

If you’re not going to be spending time in a room, turn the light off. There’s no point in lighting a room when there’s no one in the room in the first place. When leaving a room, flip that switch off and save yourself a little change.

Also, keep doors shut to rooms that aren’t being occupied. It will feel warmer in a room if the heat doesn’t have to spread itself out amongst multiple rooms. The heat will stay contained in the room which will make it feel toasty.

Layer up. It might seem tempting to crank the heat and walk around in pajama shorts and a tee shirt but that’s expensive! Instead, layer up with hoodies and long sleeved shirts to trap your body heat. You’ll keep yourself warmer without having to crank the heat all the way up.

Moisturize. Not yourself, the air! Humid air tends to feel warmer than stiff, dry air. Get a humidifier and put it to work this winter. You can turn down the thermostat a few degrees with the humidifier going. If you don’t have a humidifier placing bowls of water in front of vents that expel heat can be a good substitute.

Plastic coverings for windows will help to seal in the heat and prevent the cold from seeping in. These can be purchased for little cost and will last you all winter!

If you don’t want to stay in your apartment, consider cozying up in the fireside lounge with a cup of something hot. Maybe head over to our wine decanting lounge for something to warm your soul too!

You don’t have to empty your wallet out in order to keep your home nice and warm this winter. There are plenty of ways to warm your apartment up without cranking the heater. Keep warm!

Need Help Achieving Your Goals? We Can Help!

It’s a brand new year which means tons of opportunities to start over. If you’re looking to make improvements in your life, there’s no better time than at the start of a new year. Many people make resolutions to act differently at the beginning of the year. The goal is to stick to those resolutions until they become a habit. There’s no better place to do that than at McHenry Row Apartments.

Keep Your Friends Close. It can be hard to maintain relationships with work and school and family getting in the way. Make an effort this year to keep up with those friends that you might not have gotten to see that much last year. Even better than that, try making friends with your neighbors. It never hurts to have your neighbors as your friends. There will come a time when you need assistance and the only ones there will be your neighbors. It will do you well to be friends with them. We suggest the media room as the scene for these new budding friendships. Invite your neighbors to watch a Ravens game on the full size flat screen television. Or have a Game of Thrones viewing party equipped with drinks from the wet bar and popcorn from the popcorn machine. Your friends will adore you for the suggestion.

Cook Up Something Fresh. Perhaps your goal for 2016 is to learn a new skill. If you don’t already know how, you might consider learning to cook! Cooking for yourself lets you craft a menu that suits your needs, day by day. Not only that, but it also allows you to save money. There’s no better place to learn than in McHenry Row’s very own demonstration kitchen. The full size refrigerator, gas top stove, large oven and wine refrigerator will help you to learn your way around the kitchen. Your new friends/neighbors will thank you for becoming such an excellent chef.

Healthy New Year. One of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions is to be more healthy. One way of doing that is to learn your way around the kitchen. However, another way of getting healthy is to learn your way around the gym. At McHenry Row, that should be no problem at all. With our well equipped fitness center, it can be as easy as pie. With the cardio and resistance equipment you can get your strength up. If running on the treadmill makes you feel kind of like a hamster on a wheel, our virtual bicycle will ease your struggles. If a regular gym isn’t your speed, try the yoga/pilates studio instead! Enjoy it in solitude.

You can make any changes to your life if you put your mind to it. No matter what your goals are for 2016, McHenry Row can help you achieve them.
