Don't Let the Weather Get You Down

Now that winter is finally upon us, those heaters are going to be kicking on a lot more often. That means electric bills are going to rise. That’s a drain on your wallet because who wants to stay in a cold apartment? Don’t let the cold weather get you down though. There are ways to save that don’t mean freezing until spring.

Let the light in. While it is most certainly dark and gloomy during the winter time, what little sunshine we get should be embraced! Open those blinds and shutters and let the sunlight warm your house. It doesn’t cost any money and you can enjoy it from inside your home.

Leaving for the day? Turn the thermostat down. There’s no point in heating a house for no one! Keeping the thermostat turned down during the day whether you’re out for a couple of hours or the whole day will help you save some money in the long run.

If you’re not going to be spending time in a room, turn the light off. There’s no point in lighting a room when there’s no one in the room in the first place. When leaving a room, flip that switch off and save yourself a little change.

Also, keep doors shut to rooms that aren’t being occupied. It will feel warmer in a room if the heat doesn’t have to spread itself out amongst multiple rooms. The heat will stay contained in the room which will make it feel toasty.

Layer up. It might seem tempting to crank the heat and walk around in pajama shorts and a tee shirt but that’s expensive! Instead, layer up with hoodies and long sleeved shirts to trap your body heat. You’ll keep yourself warmer without having to crank the heat all the way up.

Moisturize. Not yourself, the air! Humid air tends to feel warmer than stiff, dry air. Get a humidifier and put it to work this winter. You can turn down the thermostat a few degrees with the humidifier going. If you don’t have a humidifier placing bowls of water in front of vents that expel heat can be a good substitute.

Plastic coverings for windows will help to seal in the heat and prevent the cold from seeping in. These can be purchased for little cost and will last you all winter!

If you don’t want to stay in your apartment, consider cozying up in the fireside lounge with a cup of something hot. Maybe head over to our wine decanting lounge for something to warm your soul too!

You don’t have to empty your wallet out in order to keep your home nice and warm this winter. There are plenty of ways to warm your apartment up without cranking the heater. Keep warm!
